Keeping Cool in a Crisis with Sleepbreeze

With storm season in the US just around the corner, it’s never too soon to check the power outage emergency kit. Flashlights, spare batteries and a portable radio are all good, but a British scientist has come up with a personal cooling system that will keep infants and seniors cool and comfortable when the air-conditioning goes down.

Called Sleepbreeze, the product drives low pressure air down a fabric duct and out through holes along its length. With the duct laid on the side of the bed, cot or sofa, it creates a gentle movement of air that promotes natural cooling without draft. Different speed and time settings, and a gradual powering down shut-off which would not wake a sleeping child, are all features of the portable device, which folds away into the fabric duct for storage. Sleepbreeze weighs just 19oz, and was developed with the military and outdoor recreation in mind. It runs off either battery or mains.

The product is only available from its British manufacturer, and will cost about $83 including shipping. Sleepbreeze is ideal for anyone who has difficulty sleeping, especially those who need to stay cool, like eczema sufferers, expectant mums and menopausal women. Notes to Editors

The Sleepbreeze was invented by former British defense scientist, Andy Buxton and his wife Jill.

In 2000, Andy won the Ergonomics industry equivalent of an Oscar for his pioneering work on modelling thermal comfort in extreme environments.

For many Americans struggling with their air con bills in the credit crunch, owning a Sleepbreeze is seen as a way of significantly cutting electricity usage, night by night.

Sleepbreeze Ltd has been actively participating in the US-led STAR-TIDES project which seeks to identify practical, low cost technologies for those living in disaster areas.

Sleepbreeze can be purchased online at http://www.sleepbreeze.co.uk/sleepbreezeshop.htm
using either PayPal or Google Checkout. Delivery is by air mail and customers receive their purchases within 10 days of Sleepbreeze Ltd. accepting an order.
